Garbage, organics and recycling

The Public Works Department, through contractor services, is responsible for the collection and disposal of residential solid waste, which includes non-organic and organic refuse. For more information, please contact Public Works.

Garbage Collection

Bowen Island Municipality has a contract with Bowen Waste Services (604-947-2255) to collect residential garbage on Bowen Island. Private businesses with waste volumes in excess of that which can fit into one garbage can are served by private contract. All collected garbage is transported to Metro Vancouver’s North Shore Transfer Station.

Organic refuse

Unused food and other organic refuse is not permitted in our garbage. Residents must separate their kitchen waste (unused food) from the non-organic garbage. Unused food includes all foods and table scraps as well as food soiled paper and boxes. Organics are picked up every Wednesday.

Compostable plastic bags

The Metro Vancouver transfer station has confirmed in 2017 that compostable plastic bin liners that are marked with the code ASTM D6400 are permitted in the organics bin.

Non-organic garbage is picked up every two weeks. Please review the Collection Map and Collection Calendar below. All garbage cans or bags must be accessible to the garbage collector by 8:00 AM on collection day. Organic refuse is picked up every Wednesday. In the event that a pickup day falls on a statutory holiday, pickup will occur on the first business day after the statutory holiday unless previously arranged.

Effective July 1, 2016, each residential property can put out ONE can of non-organic garbage. The fee is included in property taxes. Additional cans for secondary suites and/or one-time only pick-ups will require a valid garbage decal, which can be purchased at Municipal Hall.

Garbage decal rates as of July 1, 2016:

Second Can Decal (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017)

Additional Can Decal - Single use (no expiry)

Recyclables must be brought to Bowen Island Recycling Depot (BIRD) which is operated by Bowen Waste Services with the help of community volunteers. Bowen Island Municipality has a contract with Bowen Waste Services to receive, handle and transport recyclable materials to Metro Vancouver.

Over the years Bowen Island residents have steadily decreased their land fill waste through actively participating in recycling diversion programs.

Yard Trimmings

Yard trimmings are collected with Organics every Wednesday. These can be put into yard waste bags or other containers identified with a free Yard Trimmings decal, available at Municipal Hall. Sticks should be tied into bundles. Please note that there is a limit of 6 bags/bundles/cans in total including kitchen organics.

Residents are also encouraged to compost their yard waste on their properties for garden reuse, instead of using curb side collection.

Special Waste Clean-Up Days

Twice a year, residents can dispose of larger items such as appliances, mattresses and extra non-organic garbage for a small fee, which is based on load size. Hazardous materials can be disposed of free of charge. The drop off location is usually at BIRD or the Bowen Building Centre. Please click HERE for specific instructions about the next Special Waste Clean Up days.
